Find a profession trainer in a town or city and ask to learn. Each character can have two primary professions and all three secondary ones. Open your professions with K. All of this is from Blizzard's starter guide.
The professions
| Type | Professions |
|---|---|
| Gathering (primary) | Herbalism, Mining, Skinning |
| Crafting (primary) | Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring |
| Secondary | Cooking, Fishing, First Aid |
Secondary professions don't count against your two. Take all three. First Aid in particular saves a lot of eating and drinking while you level.
Learning one
- Ask a city guard for the profession trainer. They mark it on your map.
- Talk to the trainer and learn the first rank.
- Buy the tools it needs from a trade goods vendor. Forever's game files show Mining needs a mining pick and Skinning a skinning knife in your bags.
- Press K to see your professions and recipes.
Training up
Each profession has four ranks: Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Artisan. Blizzard says trainers teach the next one as your level and skill go up. It hasn't published the exact levels or skill caps for Forever. Go back to a trainer when your skill stops rising, and check for new recipes while you're there.
Picking two
- Two gathering professions make the most gold while you level. Mining and Herbalism, or Skinning with either, are common.
- A craft and its gathering partner if you want to make your own gear, such as Mining with Blacksmithing.
- What suits your class. See best professions for every class.
Changing your mind
You can drop a profession from the K window and learn another. You'll likely lose your skill in it. See unlearning a profession before you do.

Every profession has its own page under professions. For fishing, see how to fish.
