WoW Forever vs Classic vs retail (and Classic Plus): what's different
Updated 2026-11-02

WoW Forever vs Classic vs retail comes down to this: Forever is a separate, reworked version of the original world, levels 1 to 60, on the same subscription as the others. Classic stays close to the old game, and retail (now Midnight) is the modern game with its current expansion.
Side by side
| Forever | Classic | Retail (Midnight) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access | Subscription or Game Time | Subscription or Game Time | Subscription or Game Time, plus Midnight for some features |
| Level range | 1 to 60 | Depends on the version | Modern levels |
| Choosing a server | Rulesets, no realm list | Realm list | Realm list |
| Minimum storage | SSD, 128GB | 15GB | SSD, 128GB |
| Pack cosmetics | Yes | No | Some items |
The shop page says pack items aren't available in WoW Classic, and that some work in both modern WoW and Forever. Requirements are on our system requirements page. Access and cosmetics are Confirmed from the Battle.net Shop, and the realm lists are as shown on Blizzard's Realm Status page.
What Forever changes
All of these are Confirmed from Blizzard's launch post and panel recap:
- More than 1,000 new quests and new or reworked zones, including Riverglades and Mount Hyjal.
- Skyborne, a new race, plus pairs like Dwarf Shaman and Forsaken Paladin. See the race and class chart.
- New talents in three trees per class, with new abilities for every class. See what changed for every class.
- Nine new 5-player dungeons and three raids, the raids opening on 9 December.
- Hit and crit each work as one stat across melee, ranged and spells.
- Camping, the Legacy System, and rulesets in place of realms.
Blizzard calls Forever a "stand-alone" version that will evolve with new updates over time.
Forever or Classic
Pick Classic if you want the old game as it was. Pick Forever if you want that world with new things to find, and classes that have had more work done. The Classic preset in Forever covers the look and the interface, not the game rules, so it won't turn Forever into Classic. See Classic or Enhanced preset.
Forever or retail
If you enjoy the modern game's expansions and systems, retail is still there, and your subscription covers both. Forever is the slower, level 60 game. Blizzard's posts we've read don't say anything carries over from your existing characters, so plan on starting fresh.
Is Forever Classic Plus
"Classic Plus" is the name fans used for a reworked Classic, long before Forever had a name. The Blizzard Forever posts we've read don't use that term. Forever fits what many fans meant by it, but that's our reading, not Blizzard's description.
WoW Forever vs Turtle WoW
Turtle WoW was an unofficial private server, not a Blizzard product, so we don't link to it. Blizzard sued its operators in 2025, and Mein-MMO reported in April 2026 that services would end on 15 May 2026 under a settlement. PC Gamer's headline describes an injunction, so reports differ on the legal detail. We have no first-hand comparison of how the two play, so we won't offer one.
