The WoW Forever settings to change first are your preset, movement keys, nameplate name and quest markers. All of them are in the Options menu: press Escape, then choose Options. If your settings are not saving, jump to the last section.

Menu locations are Confirmed from Blizzard's new player guide and return guide. Which ones to change is our opinion.

Settings worth changing

  • Preset. You pick Classic or Enhanced at first login and won't see that screen again. To change it, go to Options, then System, then Preset. Blizzard suggests Enhanced if you're unsure. See Classic or Enhanced.
  • Movement keys. Classic defaults to camera-turning keys, and Enhanced to strafing. Strafing is easier in dungeons and PvP. It's under Game Menu, Options, Keybindings.
  • Second name. To hide it in the world, go to Options, then Nameplates, then My Secondary Name. It still shows in chat.
  • Quest markers. Enhanced has them on. If you want the Classic feel, turn them off individually and keep the rest.
  • Online language. Options, then Languages and Social, then Preferred Online Language. It's account-wide with a 24-hour cooldown, so set it carefully (Blizzard).
  • One-bag. Enhanced turns it on, and Classic keeps bags separate.

Graphics settings

  • HD or SD models. Choose per character, and change it later in Options or at a Barbershop. Blizzard says it only affects appearance.
  • Drivers first. Blizzard asks you to update your graphics drivers before you play.
  • Our approach. Start with the game's own defaults and lower one setting at a time if you need more frames. We haven't tested Forever's settings on the live client, so we don't recommend exact values yet. Hardware numbers are on system requirements.

Settings not saving

Try these in order:

  1. Exit the game normally from the menu. Settings normally write when you log out, so a crash or force-quit can lose them.
  2. Update the game and your add-ons in the Battle.net app and your add-on manager.
  3. Back up your folders. Copy your Interface and WTF folders somewhere safe first.
  4. Use Blizzard's Resetting the WoW User Interface steps: exit the game, uninstall any add-on manager for now, then in the folder for your game version, rename Cache, Interface and WTF to CacheOld, InterfaceOld and WTFOld, and relaunch.

When we read it on 2 November, Blizzard's article named the _retail_, _classic_era_ and _classic_ folders, and not one for Forever. Use the folder for Forever in your install. The reset removes your interface setup and add-on settings from the active folders, which is why you keep the Old copies.

Unverified: during the beta, players reported add-on settings being lost on a full client restart, in a thread on Blizzard's forums. We don't know yet whether that's still present in the launch client. Third-party "fixes" exist, but we don't recommend them. If you hit it after launch, report it in the Technical Support forum. Add-on specifics are on our sister site's install guide.
